This matcha is soft, light, and refreshing, with a creamy, frothy texture that has a sweet, milky softness, followed by a slightly tart and nutty aftertaste.
This surprisingly sweet and creamy matcha is perfect for those new to usucha, featuring a light body and mellow taste with well-balanced flavor notes that are silky, fresh, and leave a slightly nutty aftertaste. Although it is an entry-level option, it performs impressively well, offering a refreshing and energising effect.
For optimal results, prepare with water at 85°C (185°F) to avoid bitterness. The name was given to Shunsho XI by the tea ceremony master Kyouan Gennasai as a congratulatory gift when he was allowed to present Koicha to the imperial court in the early Meiji period. From Kanbayashi Shunsho's 450-year heritage in Uji, Ryo no Kage represents an accessible entry point into the world of traditional Japanese matcha excellence.
